Universities and sustainable mobility
The mobility generated by the necessity of accessing our university campuses has become, in the past decades, one of the aspects that compromise sustainability in Universities the most at different levels. The displacements generated, both by people and by merchandise, have a variety of effects at an environmental level, economic level, social level, security level, etc. These effects distance universities from their strategic objectives, the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in its 2030 agenda.
Work in the network. U-Mob Project
Conscious of this, Spanish universities work in network to establish common policies, strategy lines, and performance measures. Since 2010, the CRUE Commission – Sustainability of the Association of Spanish Universities (Comisión Sectorial CRUE – Sostenibilidad de la Asociación de Universidades Españolas or CRUE) has the Working Group University and Mobility with these goals. Since 2017, many of these universities are also part of the European Network for Sustainable Mobility at Universities, a project promoted by the European Commission within the framework of its LIFE Programme (www.u-mob.eu). One of the objectives of the U-Mob Project is to disseminate and help universities apply sustainable mobility plans on their campuses. At the level of Spanish universities, U-Mob is coordinated by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona o the collaborating university is an active part of these two networks.
Sustainable mobility video contest in Spanish universities
With the objective of generating awareness as a main strategy, U-Mob and the Spanish universities that integrate it, launch a joint campaign of video contests on sustainable mobility in their respective campuses. These competitions will be convened simultaneously around the celebration of the European Mobility Week of 2018 and will give the opportunity to the members of the university community to demonstrate their creativity, while transmitting their perception of accessibility and daily mobility of their place of study or work.
In this joint campaign, together with the collaborating university, universities from Catalonia, the Basque Country, Valencia, Andalusia, Madrid, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Extremadura, Castilla León and La Rioja are participants.
Each Campus will organise its own contest and choose the video that, according to its criteria, best represents the values of sustainable mobility or the deficits detected in its daily life. The winners can choose a prize from the proposed catalog, which will be sponsored by the U-Mob Project, and where they can find everything from bicycles to smartphones, computers or tablets. In addition, the best videos will be chosen by the U-Mob Project and videos will be shared on its website in order to multiply the awareness effects in other campuses in Spain or Europe through the European Network for Sustainable Mobility at Universities (U-MOB).
